Don’t judge a company by their website alone. A website does not make a company legitimate. 2. Be cautious of anyone using a free e-mail account. 3. Don’t respond to West African unsolicited email proposals. 4. Be sure you have a verifiable physical address for the company. Verify telephone numbers. 5. Get bank references for all new business contacts. 6. Make sure your bank is one of the top 100 international banks. 7. Hire an independent agent to control the shipment of goods to you. Get a third party certificate prior to shipment. That way, you’re guaranteed full shipment. 8. Dont send free samples. If you do, have the client pay for shipping & handling costs to make sure they have a real interest. 9. Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if there are complaints lodged against the company. Check websites that monitor fraud such as the National Fraud Information Center/Internet Fraud Watch. 10.
