A delegation of public officers and businessmen from Hong Kong has visited this month (March 2007) Santiago de Chile, San Pablo (Brazil) and Buenos Aires (Argentina), not only to sell their high tech products but also to visit Argentine producers.
They focalized on the food and beverage industry, and invited them to make use of the free trade agreement with Hong Kong and China, signed on 2003. Presently, Argentina has been exporting this food and beverage products, but still only in small quantities. In this direction, the executive director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council , Fred Lam, suggests that Argentine companies send their goods to Hong Kong, so that they can be packaged and entered into the Chinese market without tariffs. Asia can offer them many opportunities and Hong Kong can be the entrance door to the continent.
The main reason for choosing Argentina for this is price. One of the most important authority in the soy industry of Hong Kong has visited the country, not only interested in soybeans or soybean oil, which are commodities, but also to produce in Argentina higher added value products.
